Welcome to this new edition of Pixii News.

We are striving to make this newsletter a more frequent feature as we introduce new topics, such as articles about photography and the camera itself. And of course the latest news, reviews, and much more.

Inside News

Running Pixii was never expected to be a walk in the park and the last 3 months dialed this up to a whole new level!

Here’s what happened in that period:

• We launched the new version of our camera, the first in the world with a 64-bit processor. We have been thrilled by the fantastic reception it got.

• We have also announced the 64-bit processor hardware upgrade service for owners of previous Pixii models. The feedback from our customers has been even more amazing. With its upgradeable architecture your Pixii camera can get all the benefits of the latest model, simply by sending it to the factory for a full hardware upgrade.
  
  

• This did not go without hiccups however. We found that some of our electronic boards were misbehaving: timing constraints were not met, memory was not properly initialized. But some slipped through stress testing and shipped to customers. We are very sorry that this happened, and wish to apologize again to all who were affected by the issues (green white balance, image that did not register, etc…).
  
  Thankfully, the problems have now been corrected by new hardware tests and an important software update.
  We are really grateful to the photographers who have helped us understand the issues and manage this situation.
  

• In other news, we have been reshuffling and automating many production steps to scale to the new level of demand. The team is growing steadily around Melric and Isabelle, who has now taken a more permanent role in production.
  

• But we still can’t make enough cameras. We continue to work with current contractors and finding new ones to reduce lead times, on electronic boards, e.g., or to provide more mechanical sub-assemblies.
  

• And, of course, we are already working on new features. But more on that in our next episode…

Why Pixii is a DNG camera

JPEG vs RAW

JPEG and RAW are two very different formats. But since most cameras can output images in both, some users think of them as interchangeable or equally desirable.

It’s time to explain the differences between the two formats, their origins, their respective strengths. In an analogy with film photography, we show the image quality advantages of RAW compared to the more documentary JPEG we provide.

We also discuss our approach as a software-defined camera and our focus on RAW to give photographers access to the full potential of their camera.

Finally, we would like to thank Jim Chung for his thorough testing of our monochrome mode in Pixii against a $40 000 medium-format Phase One IQ260 Achromatic back! Although the Phase One has the advantage, as expected, you will see Pixii does not demerit.

With the new production batches, we can schedule fabrication and deliveries more accurately. We still have fabrication slots open for end of April but we expect the May allocation to quickly go, with the return of a more clement weather.
