JPEG and RAW are two very different formats. But since most cameras can output images in both, some users think of them as interchangeable or equally desirable. It’s time to explain the differences between the two formats, their origins, their respective strengths. In an analogy with film photography, we show the image quality advantages of RAW compared to the more documentary JPEG we provide. We also discuss our approach as a software-defined camera and our focus on RAW to give photographers access to the full potential of their camera.
